Rural hospitals are in serious trouble.
An October 2026 report from the American Hospital Association warned of the difficulties faced by rural hospitals: Over 40 percent of rural hospitals operate at a financial loss, and since 2010, over 150 have closed or converted, 331 eliminated obstetric services and 448 no longer offer chemotherapy.
